Dog
by Valery Loots
He is a dog when he’s hungry,
I’ve learned to feed him, so
he can wistfully wish it
and I will know.
He is a dog when he’s hungry,
no need to sugar coat.
He’ll make a quiet grumble
and I will know.
He is a dog when he’s hungry,
and sometimes it shows.
He howls his feeble cries,
and I should have known.
He is a dog when he’s hungry,
weaving his tale of woe.
The blade draws down,
and the counter bleeds bordeaux.
He is a dog when he’s hungry,
he has a clean silver bowl.
My heart lies in the sink,
I hate it when he’s home.
